A consistently underachieving team come March, Pittsburgh is again primed to have a great regular season and is one of the front runners to win the NCAA Tournament. Bringing back four starters from last year's 25-9 (13-5 Big East) team, head coach Jamie Dixon has a number of players on his roster who are capable of stepping up when the game is on the line. Headlining the team is point guard Ashton Gibbs, who averaged 16 points per game last season.
Fellow back court member Brad Wanamaker returns as a senior, having averaged 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists per game last season. The front court is deep but not necessarily proven and ready to carry the team, as big men Dante Taylor and Gary McGhee were good complementary members of the supporting cast last season. Pitt is dominant at home, racking up a 123-11 record at the Petersen Events Center over eight seasons, and the Panthers should continue to win on their home court. Pittsburgh certainly has a Sweet 16 appearance in it, and should be a Final Four team in March, unless it implodes.
