Gone from Villanova is long time point guard Scottie Reynolds, who left a legacy and is in the record books as the school’s #2 all time scorer. Reynolds and his supporting cast finished 25-8 last year (13-5 Big East), and now head coach Jay Wright will try to replace Reynolds’ production.
The Wildcats return three starters, including Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher, who take over as full time starters in the back court. Stokes averaged 10 points and 4 rebounds per game and Fisher added 13 points and 4 assists per game last year. Big man Antonio Pena will be counted on for his production as well, as he averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds last season.
The rest of the roster is largely unproven, as big man Mouph Yarou missed much of last season with an illness. As always, Wright, who has coached Villanova to six straight 20 win seasons, has a stellar recruiting class coming in, which leaves the cabinet stocked, even without Reynolds. This should be a Final Four or at worst an Elite 8 team, and one that could be as good as last year’s team, if not better.
