NFL Football
American Football has grown in popularity over the years, from a game being played in small towns, for small money to the multi million dollar business it has become. At the turn of last century, college football was immensely more popular than professional football. People such as Red Grange and Bronco Nagurski became national icons playing for their colleges long before they turned professionals. Today the game is becoming popular all over the world as the N.F.L. tries to truly make this great sport an international event. There is talk that the Superbowl might be played in London in a few years after the great success of the 2 regular season games that were played there in the last 2 years.
The reason for the great popularity of American Football is the "Grass Roots Effect". Children grow up playing football at a young age move on to Junior High School then high school, college and for a fortunate few "The Pros". This was the way it was for baseball for many years but as baseball has dwindled in popularity other sports such as basketball and football have "picked up" the slack. In certain places such as the "inner-city" basketball is "King" but in many places especially in the southern part of the U.S. children grow up wanting to be "Joe Montana" or Barry Sanders. It is not only the kids, but adults as well who use the months of September to February,to "Celebrate",America's new "National Pastime". Everybody in town gathers together on Friday night, to watch their local HighSchool play, then depending on the town, either watches on T.V. or goes to the College Game on Saturday, after that, it's ProFootball on Sunday, and of course,"Monday Night Football". Due to the popularity of cable television and E.S.P.N.,the "FootballWeek", may start on Thursday or even Tuesday.
The NFL saw a good thing many years ago, and took a popular, but "unmarketed" Sport and turned it into what it has become today. The 3 recent Commissioners of the National Football League were all successful in helping the Sport grow in his own way. Pete Rozelle started the "tranformation", by getting a National Television contract, and creating the "Superbowl"and "Monday Night Football". He was followed up by Paul Tagiabue, who grew the sport, thru cable t.v.,and "Sunday Night Football". The present "Commish" Roger Goodell, has tryed to "clean up" the league's image by imposing harsher penalties,to the players who have a history of "Trouble with the Law".All 3 of these men have created what today is,"America's",most popular sport.
The NFL has truly become a "YearRound Sport". A month after the regular season is over, people look forward to the start of players changing teams, thru "Free Agency" which is then followed by the "College Draft" then "Mini-Camps", then straight into "Training-Camp", Preseason games, then right back to the start of the Regular season. If you haven't already done so, go outside and throw a football around with your son and get him started in what has truly become "The Great American Game".
