Baltimore Ravens
History
Founded in 1996.Technically they started long before that as the "Old” Cleveland Browns, but Art Modell moved them to Baltimore in 1996, filling the need for a team in Baltimore after the Colts went to Indianapolis. Known for their defense, the highlight of their brief history was winning Superbowl XXXV over the N.Y.Giants. Superbowl Appearances (1). Superbowl Wins (1).
2009 Season Preview
The Ravens surprised many people by going the AFC Championship Game last year and upsetting top seeded Tennessee along the way. Rookie Joe Flacco played surprisingly well, they ran the ball well, and as usual the defense led by Ray Lewis kept them in games. They won't sneak up on people this year, but many good off-season acquisitions will help. They lost LB Bart Scott to the Jets, but did re-sign Ray Lewis. Dominique Foxworth will add depth at Cb. Free agent center Matt Birk will help the offensive line, as will rookie Michael Oher. It is going to be a lot tougher this year. Look for the Ravens to win about 8-9 games.

We expected Baltimore to have a shot to win that game last week, but to totally dominate the Patriots the way they did, was a surprise. Baltimore looked like a team that is ready to make a serious run at the Super bowl. They run the ball extremely well
Of all the games this weekend, this is the one that is the toughest to figure out. The Ravens have been playing exceptional football as of late, and could go all the way. That being said, the Patriots have been playing terrible football the last few weeks but are still the Patriots
With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years
Now we’re talking. The Steelers proved last week that they are alive and well, and won’t give up their title without a fight. Baltimore has been playing the best football in the NFL as of late. Both of these teams need this one badly. Pittsburgh to make the playoffs and Baltimore to have an outside shot at the division
We really felt that Baltimore would play better Monday night at Green Bay last week but too many mistakes and penalties cost them the game. Joe Flacco has to stop thinking he is Joe Namath, start to play within himself as he did last year
There was no line at the time of the writing of this column because of the uncertain Pittsburgh QB situation. Charlie Batch is gone, and but it looks like “Indestructible Big Ben”, will play even with his head injury. He has proven before how hard his head is
Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,
Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999
Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance
Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship
At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move
This is an interesting matchup. At first look you might ask how the Ravens are favored in this game, but when you look more closely at it, you will see why. If there is any defense that can possibly stop Peyton Manning, it would be Baltimore. The Colts are coming off of a really big win and might be a little flat. The Ravens were embarrassed
The Ravens are very angry about the way their season been going. They come into this game at 4-4, but they are a much better team then that. The Browns on the other hand really don’t care about how their season is going. They come into this game at 1-7
This is going to be a great battle, as the game was a few weeks ago in which the Bengals won 17-14. The Ravens still remember losing that game in the last few minutes. This matchup will have Division Championship implications down the road. The Ravens need this one slightly
When we pick a 13 point teaser, we look for games that either will win or we will be very shocked that they didn’t cover. Of all the games left on the schedule this game comes closest to fitting into those rules. Denver has been surprising people all year, and has been playing some of the best defense in all of football.
This is going to be a pretty good game. Both of these teams are playing better then we thought they would. The Vikings are coming in at 5-0, after getting a “bye" last week versus the Rams.
Finally a game worth watching and talking about, after all of the crappy games we covered so far. Obviously we can’t rule out Pittsburgh, after their new offense played great last week vs. the Chargers
This could be the Game of the Week. We are finally starting to believe in Baltimore after years of saying they are overrated. The reason is they had no QUARTERBACK. They do now.
Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers
The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.
This game scares me, not only as a Giant fan but as a bettor. This is a trap game for the Giants. After 2 huge wins against division rivals, Dallas and Washington, they now play 3 games in a row versus bad teams
Our 13 point teaser bet of the Week begins in Baltimore. We hit on most of our big teasers last week, but the one they we were worried about, and let us down was Cleveland.
Baltimore looked very impressive vs. K.C. last week. The offense is getting better and better, and you always know that the defense will be good.
It’s a real shame that Matt Cassell got hurt in the preseason. He is a really good quarterback that was certainly going to help the Kansas City Chiefs. What people don’t realize though is that their backups are pretty good as well.
The Redskins travel to Charm City in a rematch from last year’s 24-10 Baltimore victory, though neither team bears much resemblance to last season’s squads.
Monday Night Football Betting
Probably the most well known handicapping angle is the “Monday Night Home Underdog.”
Stop thinking about rain by itself as a bad weather indicator. Look at the mix of wind, turf quality, and precipitation. It's the mix that matters, not one third of the mix.
Beating NFL 1st Quarter Lines
Bettors no longer have to look at mere sides and/or game totals to strike it rich as mostly all the online sports books (and many Las Vegas) outlets provide first and second half wagering lines along with quarter by quarter prices too on football betting.
