(12-4, 9-6-1 Against the Spread): +2000 to win Super Bowl XLIV

Bet on the Carolina Panthers this season at our number 1 rated sportsbook BookMaker.com

Carolina is staring down the toughest schedule in the NFC. Most of this grueling slate comes from playing in the NFC South but games with Philadelphia, Dallas, Arizona, Miami, New England and the New York Giants won't help Panthers backers either. When betting on the Panthers, bettors should tread lightly when evaluating Carolina's pointspreads.

Panthers Strength:

The emergence of DeAngelo Williams as an elite back last season gave Carolina one of the best rushing attacks in football. Along with bruising RB Jonathan Stewart, the duo known as “Double Trouble” rumbled for more than 152 yards per game and combined to score 30 touchdowns. The pair put up 2,351 yards on the ground, which is the most by a tandem in the past 24 seasons.

The offensive line has a lot to do with the ground game. They allowed just 20 sacks and have all five starters back for 2009. Tackle Jordan Gross is the standout of the line while heavyweights Keydrick Vincent and Travelle Wharton provide a nasty force in the middle, making room for the run.

The Panthers have DE Julius Peppers at their disposal for one more year. The 6-foot-7 beast rejected a long-term deal with Carolina and is after big money elsewhere. If Peppers plays out his remaining year, the Panthers remain one of the Top 10 defenses in the NFL. Defensive tackles Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu make for a battering ram in the middle while LB Jon Benson was third in tackles in 2008. Carolina sacked the quarterback 37 times last season and should build on that this year – if Peppers remains.

Panthers Weakness:

The bad taste of the opening-round playoff loss to Arizona is still the mouths of most Panthers faithful. The source of that sourness is the five interceptions QB Jake Delhomme threw in that game. Delhomme proved he was back following Tommy John surgery, but when he was bad – he was horrific. He posted a touchdown-to-interception count of 15-12 and passed for under 200 yards per game. The focus on the run did hurt his numbers, as well as WR Steve Smith's totals. But Delhomme’s arm strength and accuracy are fading with each game.

Smith is still one of the best five receivers in the NFL but how long can he continue to defy his size and strength against the young breed of bigger stronger corners? Behind him, the Panthers have very little to throw to. Veteran WR Muhsin Muhammad is in the far twilight of his career after catching for almost 1,000 yards last season, and USC standout Dwayne Jarrett appears to not be the playmaker the franchise envisioned.

Time Team
Florida vs. Cincinnati Pick

With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years

Panthers vs Giants Pick

As a Giant fan, my blood pressure finally went down after week 10 on Monday night. The Giants played like the team that won the Super bowl in that game. Eli had his brother’s look in his eye, not the “Opie” look. Brandon Jacobs and Amand Bradshaw refused to go down and the defense stepped up

Panthers vs Patriots Pick

The Patriots showed last week that they really don’t care very much about this season. Did you see some of the really stupid passes that Tom Brady threw last week, maybe marriage doesn’t agree with him? It certainly doesn’t seem to be working for Tiger Woods. Sometimes really great athletes

Panthers vs Jets Pick

Both of these teams are on the down side. Carolina lost at home last week to Miami, and the Jets got pelted by New England. One of these teams will get a win this week but we are not sure of which one that will be. What we are certain about is that both of this offenses have struggled

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Pick

Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,

Oklahoma State vs Oklahoma Pick

Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999

Nevada vs Boise State Pick

Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance

Alabama vs Auburn Pick

Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship

Raiders vs Cowboys Pick

At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move

Dolphins vs Panthers Pick

Miami won but didn’t cover last week versus Tampa Bay while Carolina won as a 2 point dog at home against Atlanta. Our football sense said take Atlanta, but we knew better as our gambling sense said take the home dog

Falcons vs Panthers Betting

We made money on Carolina +12.5 at New Orleans last week, but were disappointed that Carolina didn’t win the game outright. Late mistakes in the second half cost them the game. Atlanta however rolled over Washington like we said they would.

Panthers vs Saints Pick

The Saints showed that they are human, by not covering vs. Atlanta last week. Carolina shocked Arizona in Arizona. This is a division game and the Panthers will bring their "A" game this week. The Saints have been playing at a very high level every week

Panthers vs Cardinals Pick

The Cardinals really proved that they are for real by going into Giants stadium and beating the Giants last week. The Panthers threw in a stinker last week in losing to Buffalo. The early money here has knocked the line up from 7.5 up to 10, quite an increase

Chargers vs Dolphins Pick

Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers

Packers vs Rams

The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.

Panthers at the Giants - Preseason 2009

The Panthers better get used to playing the Giants at the Meadowlands quickly – their preseason game is a precursor to their Week 16 matchup at New York later this season.
