The Cowboys are still America's Team, and with that popularity comes inflated pointspreads. Much like the Yankees in baseball betting, betting Dallas comes with a price. The team is opening a brand new $1.15 billion stadium and will be motivated at home for at least the first half of the season. But beware the back end of the schedule. The Cowboys are 4-9 (2-11 Against the Spread) in December over the past three seasons.
Cowboys Strength:
The Cowboys have a roster full of stars, starting with quarterback Tony Romo. When all the stars align, Dallas is one of the best teams in the NFL. Romo is a Top 5 pivot when he's focused and has major weapons like TE Jason Witten and RB Marion Barber around him. Both those players were slowed by injury last year, allowing their backups to shine. Tight end Martellus Bennett is a solid check-down option in the red zone and sophomore runners Felix Jones and Tashard Choice have game-breaking talent.
On defense, the Cowboys are just as talented. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware could be the most feared man in the league (20 sacks in 2008), while nosetackle Jay Ratliff is primed for a breakout year. Bradie James is another member of the defense coming off another solid year. The linebacker has led the team in tackles for four straight seasons. Dallas beefed up its run stop with the additions of DE Igor Olshansky and veteran LB Keith Brooking.
When these players all come together, Dallas is unstoppable. When they don't, the Cowboys are a nightmare for backers.
Cowboys Weakness:
Catching the ball, whether on offense or defense, is an issue for the Cowboys. After parting ways with Terrell Owens this summer, Dallas's receiving corps is very thin. A lot of pressure is on Roy Williams to finally play to his potential. A Texas native, Williams has had half a season and a full camp to get used to Romo and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. The inconsistent Patrick Crayton is the No. 2 wideout while Miles Austin and Sam Hurd battle for time on the wing.
The secondary has been the Cowboys' Achilles heel for the past few seasons. Last year, they ranked sixth in pass defense but were burned by big plays. They dropped a couple of questionable talents from the defensive backfield, leaning on CB Mike Jenkins, CB Terrence Newman and newly-acquired SS Gerald Sensabaugh to shut down the pass this season. Safety Ken Hamlin will also carry his share of the burden in 2009 after sub-par performances and injuries last year.

It seems almost like Vegas and the online sports books planned week 17 to be a set-up for a huge pay day this week. This is the second game in a row that is going to have stupid people looking back at last week’s game and betting the wrong team. The Eagles did need that game last week, but once thing got out of hand, they stopped playing in the second half.
With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years
We knew the Cowboys didn’t have enough guns to beat the Chargers last week, but this week is a different story. New Orleans has been just winning by the “skin of their teeth” lately, and will continue to until they finally lose their fear of losing their first game. People are fickle. You know that everybody is going to be betting the Saints here
Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,
Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999
Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance
Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship
At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move
The Packers are a better team then they have been showing the last few weeks. The Cowboys played very well in upsetting the Eagles last week. This is going to be a good game, and we are going to take the home dog here. The Cowboys have had a hard time being consistent
We hit on our 3-team ten-point teaser last week when the Giants +1.5 and Texans +1 both won easily and the Jags +13 blew out the Titans. This week we are going to come back with a 4-team 13-point teaser.
Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers
The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.
The reason we are including this game in our 13 point teaser is because this will be a great game to watch that will come down to a late field goal, or touchdown, and 3 points just isn’t enough.
The Cowboys are much better off without Terrel Owens. Tony Romo can finally take control of the team and do things his way. The NFC East has been tough in recent years, but never this tough as all 4 teams are very good.
Led by Tony Romo, the Cowboys finished a disappointing 9-7 last season (7-9 AGAINST THE SPREAD), putting the pressure on the third year starter and head coach Wade Phillips.
