The Dolphins will get some undeserved chalk due to last year's success. They should be able to make the highlight reels with the wildcat but won't win over nfl betting enthusiasts. Miami has a rough schedule in the first half of the season. It faces non-conference foes Atlanta, Indianapolis, San Diego and New Orleans all before November. And things don't get easier once winter sets in.
Dolphins Strength:
The Dolphins took a “what's the worst that can happen” attitude into last season and ended up winning the AFC East. They were able to catch many teams off guard with their single-wing offense and thrived on turnovers. Now that the cat’s out of the bag on Miami, the pressure is on to do it again.
The wildcat works, as evidenced by the number of teams toying with the formation this offseason. And while teams will be ready for it in 2009, as long as the Dolphins execute they will have continued success. Running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will be joined by draft pick Pat White, a mobile quarterback out of WVU that seems bred to run the wildcat.
Miami's defense is all about mistakes. They won't wow opponents, outside of LB Joey Porter's nose for the quarterback. But they will lull offenses into making costly errors. Last season they snagged 18 interceptions and forced 17 fumbles. The Dolphins’ 3-4 defense did a good job snuffing out the run, allowing just over 100 yards per game and an average of only 18 points.
Dolphins Weakness:
Chad Pennington's lack of arm strength showed in the later weeks of the 2008 season. While his short passes keep his accuracy up, teams are quickly realizing they need to quickly get up to the line and pick up those dump-offs. Pennington had five games when he failed to pass for over 200 yards last season.
Along with Pennington's lack of game-changing abilities, the Dolphins don't have the talent on the wings to make up for that. Ted Ginn Jr. is the closest thing Miami has to a No. 1 receiver but his speed is nullified by Pennington's noodle arm. Greg Camarillo was working well with the offense before going down with a knee injury in Week 12. If he can't return to form, the Fins are left with Davone Bess, who showed promise in the final weeks of the 2008 season. Tight end Antony Fasano is a great red-zone target but can't handle blocking assignments.

With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years
We are going to use the same philosophy with game 2 of our teaser that we used with game one. Both of these teams come into this game at 7-7 and must have a win here. Again the line is about right, as the home team should win this game by around a field goal, but it’s too close to call
We told you to take Miami over New England last week and we hope you did. Jacksonville won a big game against Houston and is in the play-off picture. Actually both of these teams want to make the play-offs and this game may decide which team goes or stays home after the season
Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,
Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999
Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance
Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship
At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move
Miami won but didn’t cover last week versus Tampa Bay while Carolina won as a 2 point dog at home against Atlanta. Our football sense said take Atlanta, but we knew better as our gambling sense said take the home dog
Just 2 weeks ago these 2 teams played a very good game on Monday Night Football, in which Miami won the game at the very end. The Jets finally got back on track last week beating Oakland 38-0. Miami was beating New Orleans 24-3 then fell apart and didn’t even cover
Both of these teams are coming of big wins. The Saints come in at 5-0 and look like the best team in football after beating the Giants 48-27. The Dolphins have won 2 straight and have shown that they are not going to quit on the season yet.
The Dolphins showed last week that they still want to have a good season, despite their 0-3 start. The Jets +6.5 disappointed us last week versus New Orleans.
Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers
The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.
It’s kind of appropriate that these 2 teams meet to open the season. They both were 2 of the biggest surprises last year. One of these teams however will be in the mix this year, the other will not.
