The return of Brady will have the Patriots' early odds pumped up. Already a very public team, New England may have trouble covering the spread bet while Brady and the receivers get back on track. Once the offense finds it stride, New England should be a solid play especially on the road where it was 6-2 against the spread last year.

Patriots Strength:

Tom Brady is back behind center. And in order to ease the quarterback back into form, the Patriots added some additional weapons. Joining Randy Moss and Wes Welker on the wings are Joey Galloway and Greg Lewis, giving New England the deepest wide receiver set in the NFL. With Brady missing last season with the infamous Week 1 knee injury, the Patriots still managed to pass for over 220 yards per game and scored 21 times through the air.

Helping set up the pass was a platoon of running backs that combined for the sixth-best rushing attack in the league. This season, Laurence Maroney is back from an injury-shortened 2008 and leads new addition Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk on the ground.

Both pass and rush games get a big boost from New England's offensive line. The line did a great job opening holes for the running backs despite a lack of true girth. The O-line is a set of speedy blockers that can adjust quickly to defenses. Led by standout Logan Mankins, the Patriots’ linemen did allow 48 sacks last season but much of that falls on the departed Matt Cassel. With Brady's pocket sense, that number will drop considerably.

Patriots Weakness:

Injuries impacted New England's defense last season. The front seven was depleted by the end of the year, leading to 107 rushing yards allowed per game last season. The Patriots have plenty of holes to fill before the season begins.

The linebacking corps is getting on in age and no longer has Mike Vrabel on the outside. Rookie standout Jerod Mayo will plug up the middle but without a true pass rush, opponents will pick apart the Patriots’ questionable secondary.

Last year, New England allowed 27 passing touchdowns due to the lack of a shutdown corner. Veterans Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden were brought in but their health will be an issue all season. Rodney Harrison's career-ending injury leaves Brandon Meriweather as the team's top strong safety but FS is still up for grabs heading into training camp.

Time Team
Ravens vs Patriots Pick

Of all the games this weekend, this is the one that is the toughest to figure out. The Ravens have been playing exceptional football as of late, and could go all the way. That being said, the Patriots have been playing terrible football the last few weeks but are still the Patriots

Florida vs. Cincinnati Pick

With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years

Jaguars vs Patriots Pick

This is one of this week best bets. Jacksonville proved last week to the nation that they are for real. They could have won that game versus the Colts, but a late interception cost them the game

Panthers vs Patriots Pick

The Patriots showed last week that they really don’t care very much about this season. Did you see some of the really stupid passes that Tom Brady threw last week, maybe marriage doesn’t agree with him? It certainly doesn’t seem to be working for Tiger Woods. Sometimes really great athletes

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Pick

Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,

Oklahoma State vs Oklahoma Pick

Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999

Nevada vs Boise State Pick

Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance

Alabama vs Auburn Pick

Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship

Raiders vs Cowboys Pick

At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move

Chargers vs Dolphins Pick

Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers

Packers vs Rams

The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.

Patriots at the Eagles - Preseason 2009

After last year’s fluke injury in which quarterback Tom Brady missed the last 15 games of the season, New England bounces back with a healthy signal caller and a hunger to make the playoffs.
