Bet on the San Diego Chargers this season at our number 1 rated sportsbook BookMaker.com
San Diego is still the team to beat in the AFC West, and because of that they get some extra points on the spread bet. However, being the best team in football’s weakest division doesn't hold water against non-conference foes. The Chargers should be a faded bet against tough teams like Baltimore, Miami, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Dallas, Tennessee and the New York Giants.
Chargers Strength:
Philip Rivers is quickly becoming one of the most feared passers in football. The Chargers quarterback puts up big numbers, like his NFL-best passer rating of 105.5 last season, and carries himself with a cocky confidence that can get under the skin of opponents. Rivers totaled over 4,000 yards and 34 touchdowns and seems to be getting better every season.
It helps to have one of the game’s most elite running backs keeping defenses on their toes. Rivers has had it easy with LaDainian Tomlinson behind him. Last season, LT was slowed by injuries but still rushed for more than 1,000 yards and scored 11 times. A lot of people are writing off the RB this year. Sure, he isn't scoring 28 touchdowns any more but he must still be accounted for by opponents.
Also pumping up Rivers’ numbers is a talented group of receivers. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson seems to have put his inconsistent seasons behind him with a 1,000-plus yard showing in 2008. Jackson is a beast and hits harder with the football than most of the guys covering him. Veteran Chris Chambers is still a big target along with TE Antonio Gates, who was hurt at the start of last year but finished with 60 catches and eight touchdowns.
Chargers Weakness:
Teams found out quickly they could pass at will against the Chargers last season. San Diego allowed over 247 yards through the air and had just 15 interceptions on the year. Many fingers point to the absence of LB Shawne Merriman as an excuse. While Merriman is a talented pass-rusher he isn't the key to the defense. The Chargers had just 28 sacks without him but that was more due to fact that the front of the 3-4 is wearing down.
The secondary was let down my Antonio Cromartie. He was picked on by opposing quarterbacks and tried too hard to make the big play, putting himself out of position. At safety, San Diego is hoping Clinton Hart can stay healthy and improve on his lackluster 2008. His partner Eric Weddle is still wet behind the ears and showed his lack of focus at the worst times.

With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years
Be very careful the next 2 weeks in your bets, as some lines might seem a little strange, as teams try to make the playoffs and other teams try to play spoiler. We are going to start this week with our weekly teaser bet, and include a great Christmas Day game in it
Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,
Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999
Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance
Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship
At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move
Denver is in trouble if they lose Kyle Orton for an extended period of time. Chris Simms has no talent and is only in the NFL because of his father. San Diego is playing much better as of late
After beating Philly 2 weeks ago the Raiders lost by 38 points to the Jets at home.San Diego got back on track by beating K.C. by 30.On paper this game is no contest. We have spoken before about, doing the opposite of common sense in sports betting and having some balls, but even I don’t have enough courage to take Oakland
The Broncos have been making us money every week, and San Diego has been hot and cold. The Chargers have had 2 weeks to think about their pathetic defensive performance vs. Pittsburgh. In the 4th quarter they showed that when they are in trouble they can score very quickly.
Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers
The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.
The Seattle Seahawks would like to forget that 2008 ever happened. Their 4-12 record (7-8-1 AGAINST THE SPREAD) was largely due to the injury of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who appeared in just seven games, throwing for a career low 57.8 quarterback rating last season.
