First-year coaches have been the hot ticket in the NFL. Morris is a breath of fresh air following Gruden but won't be an instant winner like Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh. Tampa Bay's offense could be better than expected, especially if Leftwich can provide steady passing and keep the defense off the field. The Bucs have a tough schedule which will provide some lofty spreads. Keep in mind if betting on the Bucs this season, be surprised if they keep scores closer than expected.
Buccaneers Strength:
The Buccaneers beefed up their running game with the addition of Derrick Ward. The former Giant rushed for over 1,000 yards behind Brandon Jacobs last season but will take the lead in Tampa Bay this year. Joining Ward in the backfield are injury-prone running backs Earnest Graham and Cadillac Williams.
The impact of the rushing attack lies solely with the offensive line and their zone-blocking techniques. Tampa Bay boasts one of the most young and steady O-lines in football behind Pro Bowl guard Davin Joseph and tackles Jeremy Trueblood and Arron Sears.
The Bucs also improved their passing game by acquiring TE Kellen Winslow from Cleveland. Winslow is known almost as much for his mouth as his game but is still one of the best TE in the NFL. He caught over 1,000 yards in 2007 but missed six games last year due to multiple ailments. If he stays healthy, Winslow is a force and adds to an exciting receiving corps already in place.
Wideouts Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton excelled last season. Bryant had a monster second half, finishing with 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns. Clayton is still trying to live up to his rookie season. Last year, he saw only 38 balls but will be a bigger threat in 2009.
Buccaneers Weakness:
Tampa Bay doesn't have a quarterback. It has a couple players that have at one time in their careers handled the position and an unproven rookie, but none on them have earned No. 1 status. The Buccaneers added Kansas State QB Josh Freeman during the draft in hopes that he will finally give them a franchise quarterback. But he won't see the light of day this year. Instead Tampa Bay will turn to Josh McCown and Byron Leftwich, who showed promise last season in Pittsburgh.
With the firing of coach Jon Gruden, the Bucs made a commitment to starting over. New head coach Raheem Morris followed that commitment by ridding the defense of veterans like Derrick Brooks and Cato June, among others. That overhaul leaves Tampa Bay plugging players into positions that they haven't played since high school. Defensive back Ronde Barber is getting older by the minute and leaves hulking DE Gaines Adams as the lone standout of the stop unit.

With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years
Boy did the Saints really change the playoff picture with their loss to Dallas last week. Not only did it give life to the Cowboys, it showed that any team still might win the NFC. As a matter of fact these are our most likely teams to go to the Super bowl now. The Eagles, Saints, Giants, Cardinals, Cowboys, Packers and the Vikings in that order to win it all. Not quite the way the seeds are right now
Mark Sanchez is a little banged up for the Jets here so at the time of writing this column there was no betting line on the game. No matter, we couldn’t care less who wins this game. The Jets still feel like they can make the playoffs, yea right, and I still have a chance to marry Scarlett Johansen
Atlanta showed a lot of character ,with their late rally against the Giants last week. They really are a pretty good team. Unfortunately they might miss the playoffs now. They can’t catch the Saints, and that loss might hurt them down the road for a wild card spot
Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,
Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999
Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance
Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship
At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move
We said last week that New Orleans is having a difficult time lately being the hunted as opposed to the hunter. They will continue to play that way until they finally lose a game. The sports books here say take the home dog and we will. Traditionally in late November there are always a weekend where there are a lot of crazy upsets
Congratulations to Tampa Bay who finally won a game last week vs. Green Bay. The Dolphins have been playing hard every week since their 0-3 start. This is the NFL and the margin of victory is very slight. As you’ve heard me say before it comes down to motivation
Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers
The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.
The Cowboys are much better off without Terrel Owens. Tony Romo can finally take control of the team and do things his way. The NFC East has been tough in recent years, but never this tough as all 4 teams are very good.
Last season was a good time to be betting on the Tennessee Titans.
