Last season, the Redskins started out on fire. They went 6-2 (5-3 Against the Spread) in the first eight weeks of the season before the bottom fell out. The team covered the spread just once in the final eight games of the year. Bettors should expect the same from Washington in 2009.
The Skins open the season with games against St. Louis, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Kansas City. A healthy offense and defense should be able to cover the spread in those contests. However, following the Week 8 bye, Washington stares down a daunting schedule. And as the Sundays get colder, expect this injury-prone roster to fall apart and provide great play-against value.
Redskins Strength:
The heart and soul of the Redskins is RB Clinton Portis. Whether it is his wacky interview antics or his performances on the field, Washington's success starts with No. 26. Last season, Portis put up monster numbers, totaling more than 1,400 yards on the ground and nine touchdowns.
Like in past years, Portis was slowed by injuries and struggled in the final weeks of the schedule, rushing for just 281 yards in the last five games. But as long as he can still put one leg in front of the other, Portis will be on the field Sundays.
On the other side of the ball, the Redskins are building on a very impressive season. The defense allowed the fourth-fewest yards and sixth-fewest points against in the NFL. The line got a facelift this off season, losing Jason Taylor and Demetric Evans, but the Skins brought in high-priced DT Albert Hanyesworth and drafted DE Brian Orakpo out of Texas. In the secondary, Washington returns CB's DeAngelo Hall and Carlos Rogers as well as budding star LaRon Landry and Chris Horton at safety.
Redskins Weakness:
Jason Campbell seems like the odd man out among NFC East quarterbacks. The fourth-year play caller was solid in his first year in coach Jim Zorn's west-coast offense and should improve with more familiarity. However, Campbell seems to lack the leadership skills of his divisional counterparts and crumbled in the second half of 2008.
Not helping things is Washington's declining receiving corps. Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El are getting older and have a tough time against bigger, stronger secondaries. They combined for over 1,600 yards through the air but scored just 10 times last season. Even standout TE Chris Cooley struggled to produce last season. He reeled in 849 yards receiving but scored just once after finding pay dirt eight times in 2007.

With emotions running high on both sides of the ball, one team (Florida) will benefit greatly. The other will suffer an embarrassing loss on New Year’s Day. Cincinnati is playing without former head coach Brian Kelly, who led the Bearcats to significant success in recent years
Very sad night for Giant fans last week. Winning the division is out of the question now, but the playoffs are still a possibility. No matter, this team is not winning the Super bowl. This is the worst Giant defense I have ever seen. We have cornerbacks playing safety
We were right in saying that Washington would play hard against Dallas last week and this week will no different. The Washington defense has been playing much better, and if the offense can score some points then they might be able
Virginia coach Al Groh has beaten the Cavaliers’ arch rival Hokies just one time in his nine years at UVA. He and the Cavaliers look to make that number two and possibly avoid his firing this Saturday in Charlottesville. The Hokies are in a down year at 8-3 and will not contend for the ACC Championship,
Not quite the same allure as the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, but this week’s Bedlam Rivalry game is Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl. The Cowboys have had a tremendous season so far and Oklahoma is sitting at 6-5, ensured of its worst season since 1999
Boise State doesn’t play too many home games where they are only 14 point favorites, but that is exactly what they are this week when Nevada comes to play on the blue turf. Boise State needs a win this week, and badly. Though the Broncos are 11-0, their only hope for a BCS appearance
Despite an 11-0 record up to this point, Alabama still realistically needs to win its next two games to get into the National Championship. With Florida a perfect 11-0 as well, the Crimson Tide will need to beat Auburn this week and Florida in the SEC Championship
At first glance you might think that it was quite a shocker that Oakland beat Cincinnati last week, but at we said the Bengals were coming off their biggest win in years and might be flat. We also felt that Jamarcus Russell was hindering the Raider offense and the switch to anybody but he was the correct move
Atlanta +10 made us money last week on Monday Night Football at New Orleans. We almost made more money on Atlanta +450 on the money line. The Falcons had many chances to win that game. They missed 2 field goals
Both of these teams have problems. Miami really can’t play offense at the N.F.L. level. They look like a college or high school team at times, with their “Wildcat” offense and their quarterback who throws the ball like a shot put. Another quarterback, who has a funky delivery is Phillip Rivers
The next 2 games that we are picking, we are going a little bit out on a limb. There are 2 home dogs that both played very well last week as huge underdogs. Both teams had opportunities to win outright but didn’t.
The Redskins travel to Charm City in a rematch from last year’s 24-10 Baltimore victory, though neither team bears much resemblance to last season’s squads.
