The Los Angeles Angels are coming off a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals and have won five consecutive series. Manager Mike Scioscia’s club is 11-4 during interleague action this year and 130-83 since the start of the 2000 campaign.
Don’t expect the recent success to stop in matching up with their cross town rivals, as the Angels have won seven of the last nine meetings against the Dodgers. Los Angeles has also won its last five series openers.
Rookie right-hander Tyler Chatwood (5-4, 3.64 ERA) enters having won his last two contests, allowing just a single run and eight hits over 14 innings of work. He is still struggling with this control, issuing seven walks over that span and 45 free passes in 89 total innings this season.
Chatwood has already been introduced to this rivalry, picking up a 6-1 victory against the Dodgers on June 25, giving up a single run and four hits over seven frames.
The Los Angeles Dodgers haven’t shared the same type of success during interleague play, posting a 4-6 mark in its first 10 games heading into this three-game series. In fact, the Blue Crew has not recorded a winning season against the American League since going 10-8 in 2004.
“You’ve got to be realistic about what’s going on, but you never quit believing that anything can happen if you can start putting streaks together,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly commented. “You know there’s a lot of time left, but we have to put an extended streak together now.”
His squad has dropped 10 of 15 and a loss Friday would drop the Dodgers 11 games below .500 for the first time since the end of the 2005 season. It doesn’t help that the club is 13-41 in its last 54 interleague road games.
Dodgers starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda (5-9, 3.10 ERA) is aiming to register his first victory since May 17, coming into this outing a loser of six straight decisions. The right-hander was on the losing end versus Chatwood in last weekend’s series.
Kuroda has been solid on the road during the 2011 season, posting a 3-4 mark and 2.80 ERA in seven outings, but has received just a run of support in his last two starts away from Dodger Stadium.
The Japan product is 0-2 with a 3.97 ERA in two lifetime starts versus the Angels.
Bettors will be interested in knowing that the Angels are 40-19 in their last 59 interleague games as a favorite, while the Dodger are 6-19 in Kuroda’s last 25 starts as a road underdog.
