The Toronto Blue Jays (+190) and Boston Red Sox (-210) are set to meet up for the middle game of a three-game series Tuesday night at Fenway Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. (ET).
Toronto came away with a 9-7 victory over Boston in the series opener Monday afternoon and has now won four of 10 meetings this season. The Blue Jays were outscored 35-6 over their previous three games against the Red Sox at the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays have a winning 23-22 mark on the road, winning four of their last five contests, while capturing five of their last nine completed series away from home.
Left-handed pitcher Brett Cecil (1-3, 7.24 ERA) will try and lead the club to back-to-back victories for the first time since June 25-26, but enters on a two-game losing streak. He was handed a 6-2 defeat in his last outing, giving up six runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 frames.
Cecil will be making just his second start since returning from a two-month stint with Triple-A Las Vegas. “I felt like I pitched a lot better than the lines shows,” Cecil commented about his June 30 appearance.
He will be making his seventh career start versus the Red Sox, coming in with an even 3-3 mark and 6.15 ERA, picking up all three of his wins at Fenway Park despite an inflated 6.94 ERA.
Boston has recorded a 29-18 mark against Toronto dating back to 2009 and will likely bounce back from yesterday’s loss. The Red Sox are just 7-8 in their last 15 games, but have won 19 of their last 28 overall.
The club has always enjoyed great success against the Blue Jays, as its 277 all-time wins in the series is the most ever by any squad when playing Toronto.
Jon Lester (10-4, 3.43 ERA) earned a 5-2 win in Philadelphia last time out and will be looking to post his 13th quality start of the season. The left-hander posted a 3-2 record and 2.31 ERA in five outings last month.
Lester has enjoyed tremendous success against tonight’s AL East opponent, going 9-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 16 starts, including a dominating 14-1 win at the Rogers Center on June 12. In that particular outing, he surrendered just a single run and two hits over eight frames.
The main matchup in this contest will be his ability to continue getting Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista out, as the All-Star is just 8 for 34 (.235) with three home runs against him.
Bettors will be monitoring this particular line closely, as the Red Sox are an incredible 19-2 in Lester’s last 21 starts as a home favorite of -201 or greater. It’s also important to note that the ‘over’ is 4-0-1 in that situation.
Weather forecasts are suggesting a clear night in the Boston area with game-time highs in the low-70s. A light breeze out of the southwest is also expected.
