The 140th British Open golf championship starts next Thursday at the Royal St George Club, Sandwich in Kent. The Royal St George course has played host to the Open Championships on 14 occasions and on only three times have players won the tournament with an under par score. With Tiger Woods missing the event due to injury it seems like everyone interested in golf betting has had a bet on Rory McIlroy to win. After winning the US Open with a 16 under par score maybe that isn’t too surprising, but at odds of 6.00 McIlroy looks plenty short enough. While more majors will no doubt come his way, to win more than one in a season is a difficult task and we just feel there could be better value elsewhere next week.

The British Open has been won seven times in the last 10 years by players from the USA, so that is a factor to remember when making a selection. It has thrown up a few surprise winners too, like Todd Hamilton and Ben Curtis, so don’t let big prices or unfashionable profiles put you off.
It could be the tournament for steady players and Jason Day has to be considered. He finished second to McIlroy at the US Open and also played well at the Masters. He has the temperament to do well on a course like this and is available at odds of 31.00. With ¼ the odds for the first five places on offer, an each/way bet has a lively chance of bringing a profit. Phil Mickelson doesn’t have the best of records in the British Open, but he looks overpriced at 31.00 and might be worth a little stake at that price.

Hunter Mahan is a player who is usually in the leading pack come the last day of a tournament. He is very consistent and that might be enough to win this. If it’s going to be a player with a lesser profile that wins, then Mahan is worth considering at odds of 51.00.

German Martin Kaymer 21.00 has the game to challenge for the title. He looks the best equipped of the European challengers and should do well. Retief Goosen is another player who likes links golf and with 10 top 15 finishes in Open Championships looks to have solid each/way claims at 46.00.

If you are looking for a player to bet on at three figure odds, then we suggest Stewart Cink 101.00. He hasn’t won since being crowned Champion at Turnberry in 2009, but is still a player who is capable of putting together four decent rounds. He is probably the best US links golf player in the field and it would be foolish to discount him.
Our pick to win is Jason Day with our longshot bet Stewart Cink.
