BYU Cougars at No. 24 Texas Longhorns (-7), Total 48 |
BYU opened up with a slim 14-13 road win over the Ole Miss Rebels last week as two-point road favorites and falling well below the posted total of 54. The Cougars will now be facing the Texas Longhorns for the third time in history, coming in with a 2-0 series advantage.
THe program captured a home-and-home series during the 1987-88 seasons and has tallied a 12-14 all-time mark against the Big 12. The last time the team played such an opponent was the 2009 season opener, upsetting the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners.
After the first week of play, BYU’s defense ranks as one of the best in the country. “It was probably one of the most gratifying victories since I’ve been the coach,” commented Bronco Mendenhall. The Cougars have now won four of their last nine matchups with ranked opponents.
Cougars Betting fans will find that the Cougars are 5-1 ATS in their last six non-conference games and the ‘under’ is 10-1 when playing as an underdog.
Texas has won 35 of its last 39 games in September and enters this game off a 34-9 win over the Rice Owls as 23.5-point home favorites. The Longhorns out-gained their opponent by a larger 282-yard margin in the opener.
Head coach Mack Brown has won 134 games in Austin, which has him placed No. 2 all-time in the program’s history. He is chasing after Darrell Royal, who tallied 167 victories.
The Longhorns are focused on bouncing back from a disappointing 5-7 season a year ago, which included a 2-5 mark in Austin, the program’s first losing campaign inside the venue since the 1997 season.
Plenty of players got experience in the opener, with eight making receptions and seven running backs getting a carry.
Defensively, the team looked sharp in its first game without defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, who is now Florida’s head coach. The Longhorns stop unit limited the Owls to just 224 total yards.
Texas betting is 4-12 ATS in its last 16 games overall, including a 1-7 ATS mark following a win. The ‘under’ is 7-3 in the team’s last 10 games as a home favorite.
