The San Diego Chargers will look to play the role of spoiler this Sunday afternoon when they travel to Oakland County Coliseum to close-out their regular season against the Oakland Raiders, who need a win to keep their AFC West title hopes alive. The kick-off is slated for 4:15 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast on CBS.
San Diego’s division title hopes came to an abrupt end last Sunday with an ugly 38-10 loss to Detroit as a one-point road favorite. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and left the Chargers at 7-8 straight-up on the year and a costly 5-10 against the spread. The total has gone 7-8 in their 15 games this season.
It is hard to know what to expect from San Diego this Sunday after last week’s meltdown. Philip Rivers reverted back to his old form with two interceptions and a completion percentage of just 52.8 and the defense gave up 440 yards of total offense to the Lions. This team could easily be going through the motions this Sunday with the future of head coach Norv Turner in serious doubt.
Oakland needs a win and a Denver loss to lock-up its first division title since 2002. The Raiders are 8-7 SU this season and a profitable 9-5-1 ATS. Last Sunday, they hammered-out a 16-13 overtime victory over Kansas City as one-point road underdogs. The total stayed well ‘under’ the 42-point line, but it has gone ‘over’ in nine of their previous 14 games.
One of the major concerns for Oakland in this game is a defense that is ranked 29th in the NFL in both total yards and points allowed. It played well against the Chiefs, but surrendered an average of 36 points a game in three previous losses.
The Chargers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games against the AFC West. The total has gone ‘over’ in eight of their last 11 games on the road.
The Raiders are 10-2 in their last 12 games against the AFC West and the total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last six games overall.
Head-to-head in this series, San Diego is 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings overall, but 7-2 ATS in its last nine trips to Oakland. The total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of the last 14 meetings overall.
The Chargers will do enough to keep this game competitive, but with nothing on the line stick with Oakland to get the win and cover the three points.
The Pick: Oakland 27 San Diego 23
