Despite being a road game for Texas, roughly 85 percent of the crowd in Houston at Rice University will be wearing burnt orange. A reasonable three hour drive from Austin, Longhorns fans will pack the stadium to the point where the only reminder that it the game is not being held in Austin is the size of the stadium. While 18 starters return for Rice from last year’s 2-10 squad, that will not matter one bit for the Longhorns, who return six offensive and seven defensive starters.
This game will be over by halftime, as long as first time starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert does not struggle early on. Gilbert appeared in clean up duty mostly last season, but fans got to see a glimpse of him in the national championship game against Alabama. During the championship, Gilbert completed 15 of 40 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.
Not the best numbers, certainly, but not bad against a stout Alabama defense. Look for Texas to cover the 26.5 point spread in what will almost look like a home game.
