The breakdown: Under seeded, Tennessee imploded in its conference semifinals, losing by 29 points to Kentucky. The Volunteers still remain a three point favorite over Mountain West Tournament champions San Diego State.
Why Tennessee will win: If there is any team capable of beating some of the titans in the field, it might be Tennessee. The Volunteers beat both Kansas and Kentucky this year, the only team to do so, which will give Tennessee some confidence heading into their first round match up. Scotty Hopson and Wayne Chism lead Tennessee and their success will largely determine how far the Volunteers are able to go.
Why San Diego State will win: The Aztecs should know how to beat Tennessee, if they watched the SEC Tournament. San Diego State saw Tennessee get frustrated, physical, earn technical fouls and eventually collapse. If the Aztecs can get under Tennessee’s skin, they could emerge with the win.
Verdict: Tennessee by six or less.
