It’s not every day that the Seattle Sounders get the opportunity to host the defending English Premiere League champions, but that’s exactly what’s going to occur on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Field. The game will be televised on Fox Soccer with the first kick expected at 7 p.m. PST.
The two are meeting up as part of the World Football Challenge, with Manchester United proving victorious in its first game, posting a 4-1 win over the New England Revolution last Wednesday.
Manchester United came away with a 19th Premiere League crown last season and will have star striker Wayne Rooney in tow, who scored a total of 16 goals in the 2010-11 season overall.
One player that will be missing from United in this friendly-exhibition is Mexico Star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, which will cause boss Alex Ferguson to change things up a bit on the front line.
Seattle has won seven of eight contests and is now directly behind the Los Angeles Galaxy in second place in the Western Conference standings. The Sounds are certainly a high-powered offense, ranking second in the MLB with 32 goals.
The club will be missing Steve Zakuani and John Hurtado, but will have shot-stopper Kasey Keller in goal, who will also face the Reds later on the tour.
Star forward Fredy Montero will be looked upon to get things going up front, as he’s scored three times in his last two games. He leads the team with six goals and five assists on the season.
“Freddy is extremely quick and he’s always dangerous in the box,” said coach Sigi Shmid about his star who came over from Deportivo Cali.
These two teams have not played each other since 1982, with Seattle capturing a 3-0 victory.
Attendance for this contest is expected to be near a record for such a contest, as the Sounders played in front of 66,848 fans versus Barcelona in 2009.
